Obstructed View

On Saturday I went to see the Broadway production of Dreamgirls with my mom. (Why yes, I am so cultured that I saw not one, but TWO, Broadway musicals in the same week.) This was my mom’s birthday present. She’s easy to shop for that way because she always wants to go see a show and then I always have someone to go with. Since the cats aren’t high brow enough to like musicals. They usually just try and meow along and I’ve been kicked out of quite a few shows that way.

The show was fabulous! I never saw the movie, so it was all new to me. It was so, so good! And the Beyonce part was played by Syesha Mercado, of American Idol fame. And she was fantastic. And the chick who played the Jennifer Hudson role was so good she repeatedly gave me chills. And before this tour, she really was only an extra in a few musicals. She’s going to be the next big thing!

The one thing about the show that sucked was my view. I bought these tickets a long time ago (my mom’s birthday is early December) so they were good seats, smack dab in the center in one of the first few rows of the balcony. But instead of seeing singers in sparkly outfits, I looked at this.

Yep, the back of this man’s head. I know it is hard to understand just what it is like, so I did a mock up of what it looked like when performers were on stage.

Thankfully I could just lean into my mom’s personal space so I could actually see AND hear what was going on.

After the show, my mom and I went to a nice steak dinner. We took our time, had great food, good conversation and plenty of alcohol.

After dinner we continued her belated birthday celebration at an Irish bar, with more drinks! My mom lives with my Grandma and doesn’t get out a lot, so she got to decide how long we stayed out. And we had an awesome night. It was great to just be able to sit and chat, especially since I hadn’t seen my mom since Christmas.

Today, of course because I am old, I was a wee bit hungover, so I spent the day on the couch watching TV. I left for all of 20 minutes to drive to Taco Bell to pick up some food. But other than that, my couch and I were inseparable today. Which is how most Sundays should be, in my book.

So tell me, how was your weekend? Do anything exciting? Did you watch The Pregnancy Pact? Spill it, internet!

  1. Was I the only one who found Pregnancy Pact a little anticlimactic?! I mean, the previews made it look all scary and shit, and then it fell flat in the last 20 minutes, in my opinion.

I loved the mock up. Made me laugh out loud, (which is a bad thing because everyone in my house is alseep.)
I’m pretty sure I’ve sat behind him before.

  3. Since I’m only 5′ 3″, pretty much all shows have an obstructed view for me. 🙂

My sister had the same view when we saw Riverdance this weekend. Somehow she magically gets stuck behind the tall guy every single time. We switched seats at intermission (since I’m half a foot taller), but the guy came back to his seat after Act II had started, and then switched seats with his wife! So Jen got screwed. Aside from that Riverdance was awesome, and if you like shows and dancing and stuff, then I recommend it. I’m eagerly awaiting when Dreamgirls comes to LA. You’re not the first person who’s said it’s great and I can’t wait to see it myself. Next weekend we’re seeing Stomp AND Avenue Q. I love the theater!!

That mock up picture? Totally classic.

The only thing I hate about going to the theater is having to look around other people’s heads!

Yes, I am a douchebag who just said “theater”. *whistle*

I love that you had a night out on the town with your mom – you guys are the best! That mock-up is amazing. I’m glad you could lean into your mom’s personal space. Hooray for birthdays!

  8. Candy says:

That view totally sucks, and I know, because it’s the exact view I had for Jersey Boys. DAMN THAT MAN! I bet it’s the same guy, going to shows, obstructing views.

In New York, we saw a show in the front row of the balcony. I couldn’t see over the railing! I asked the usher if anyone had ever mentioned that before and he said “No, but I can get you a phone book to sit on if you need it.” I’m 5’6″ – that’s not short, nor am I eight years old. A phone book!

And yes, The Pregnancy Pact, I think you need to write an entire post about this, because I have so, so many thoughts that I need to hear what someone else thought.

Hurrah! for great weekends with great moms.

This weekend I ran last minute errands and finished packing for Asia. I thought it might be nice to make sure my suitcase would a) zip and b) be able to be lifted before I leave on Wednesday (!!!). I also got a pedicure. Priorities are important.

Um-OF COURSE I WATCHED THE PREGNANCY PACT!! I actually was very depressed afterwards because I am ok looking, successful and pretty darn hilarious and 18 whiny, not-so-cute high school girls had more sex in one week than I have in…well let’s just say its been awhile!!!!! Still, it did not disappoint!! God bless you lifetime!! Keep pumping out the scandals!!!!!

  17. I agree: Sundays=my butt+couch+television!

Incidentally your Dreamgirls view is a view I encounter with regularity because, lo, I am short. And somehow tall people looooove to sit in front of the short chick. And talk. But that’s another story.

I’m glad you had a good time with your Mom–and that you have someone to see shows with. I love seeing live shows but the husband is not so much a fan of going to things in which there are not larger than life explosions. Too bad you have all that family there or I’d invite you to come live here in PDX so we could go to shows all the time together!

Wish I had the kind of mom I could get drunk with.

Did not watch the Pregnancy Pact but I plan too! I love myself a good teen-angst movie.

And yes, that is how sundays should be spent. Sadly now that i have kids if that happens, which is almost never, its spent watching the Disney Chanel. I miss my Lifetime TV!

  22. Kristin says:

That’s the same view I had at Banana Shpeel! Can’t we implement some rule where if you are over a certain height you have to sit in a separate section or on the end of an aisle?

I did catch most of the Pregnancy Pact (I missed the first 30 minutes). I hope there is a blog post coming about it, because I have to hear what you think.

The mock-up made me laugh my ass off – love his ears! I always seem to have a similar view when I attend shows…just bad luck I guess. Sounds like you and mom had an awesome time and I’m so happy for you both – you are an awesome daughter!
