The Five-Day Week

Posted By on January 18, 2010

Did you know this will be my first 5-day work week of the New Year? And really my first one since the middle of December? I’m tired just thinking about it.

The first week of January, I went to Atlanta. And then last Friday, I was feeling under the weather so I called in sick. For some reason (JULIE & JULIA) I feel the need to say this on my blog like I’m covering my tracks or something. Like I was really home cooking Beef Bourguignon because I fell asleep on the couch and burnt the dish in the oven. The only thing that is true in that sentence is I FELL ASLEEP ON THE COUCH.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Have you seen Julie & Julia? Spoiler alert: It was horrible. Julie Powell is a whiney, pretentious asshole. And I guess the movie makes her out to be nicer than she really is in real life. And poor Amy Adams! She’s so cute, but that hair is BAD. And why should the princess from Enchanted have to play such a horrible human being? Which I guess makes her a good actress because Amy Adams? I HATED you as Julie Powell. Well done.
If you feel you must see this movie, please do see it for Meryl “T-Bone” Streep’s performance as Julia Child. She was excellent and made me want to know and read more about Julia Child. And also wish she was still alive so I could be her friend and we could sit around and eat butter and drink wine and talk about that horrid Julie Powell.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This post is going to be all over the place.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So this weekend, I did a whole lot of nothing. See above: falling asleep on the couch. In fact, I may not have showered for more than 2 days. And then when I did shower, I had Depeche Mode’s “Clean” in my head for hours.
“Clean. The cleanest I’ve beeeen…”
BUT! I did get my eyebrows waxed. (Just eyebrows. Not bikini, or then I would have showered. I’m not that disgusting.) And I got gas in my car! And I loaded AND then unloaded the dishwasher simply because I was out of cutlery. And I re-filled my prescription at a drug store that is close to my new house and not my old one. Which should make me more likely to pick it up. (And NO, AETNA, I will not be doing mail order prescriptions because EVERY time I’ve done that? I’ve lost my job. Sorry it costs you more. And me MUCH more.)
I also did six loads of laundry. “SIX!” you exclaim! “How can one person have that much laundry? Did you take in boarders? Were the cats especially pukey this weekend?”
Well, yes, they were exceptionally pukey and no, I have not taken in any new houseguests. I just have a compact washer and dryer. This is not complaining. This is just serving as an explanation as to why I have more loads, since I have a tiny washer and dryer. And I don’t really care, since I can do my laundry naked while sitting on the couch and not have to step foot outside.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I found this flyer under my door when I got home today.

It’s good to know if I’m ever faced with a flyer threatening my life, I’m totally safe.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, this morning we had freezing fog in Chicago. I laughed when I heard about it and saw the funny graphic on The Weather Channel app on my phone. I mean, what the hell is freezing fog? How is it different than freezing rain or sleet? I mean, HOW is that even possible?
It’s possible. Let me tell you. And when you experience freezing fog, it’s like you GET it. You’re like “THIS? This is freezing fog!” It’s kind of like a frozen mist. It is definitely the weirdest weather thing I have ever experienced in my life. It’s like if you were outside in Arizona in the middle of the summer, sitting on the patio with those misters, and then all of a sudden the temperature dropped 80 degrees and all of a sudden that water coming out of the misters was frozen, like snow-ish. So bizarre.
But hey, it wasn’t snow, so I am not complaining.
So since I’m trying to get back to posting all the time, I am in need of some ideas for posts. Is there anything you want me to write about? Death Is Not An Option themes? Do you have questions for me? Do you have questions for BACON? Help me with my writer’s block! Or one of the cats gets it.
  1. Oh man, I have a whole…. Viewpoint on Julie & Julia, Julie Powell and Julia Child but rather than take up your whole comments section I’ll save it for my own blog 🙂 Or an e-mail or something. Cliff’s notes? I love the movie but not because I have any notions that it’s good. I’m a sucker for the warm and fuzzy ending and have developed GINORMOUS crushes on T-Bone and Julia Child.
    Though honestly: if you have a squeamish bone in your body, skip Cleaving (Julie Powell’s follow up to Julie and Julia). That book will put you off your lunch and make vegetarianism look a LOT more appealing. The writing is pretty okay but, um, there are some very…descriptive…passages.
    And because I don’t want anything bad to happen to your kitties (no matter how barfy they may get)……perhaps….um…. damn it, the pressure! It is too much! Run kitties! Ruuuuunnnnn!
    I loved Meryl as Julia. She was the bomb.
    Sorry kitties, I have no brilliant ideas to save you.
    I love your posts. Even when you say you’re going to be all over the place I find your writing so entertaining. I will let you know if I come up w/any ideas for your future posts because that kitty sure does look cute and I wouldn’t want anything to happen to it!
    I thought Julie and Julia was a cute movie, but didn’t read Julie Powell’s book – I was so shocked to hear that she cheated on her husband! Obviously I’m basing my impression of her husband on the movie which may not be fair but he seemed so supportive and loving. My husband would have been like, bitch, please. I am not eating aspic. (He probably would not have said ‘bitch’ though).
    I loved M. Streeps’ portrayal of Julia Childs – I would highly, highly recommend the book My Life in France by her. Julia Childs’ personality comes right throught and it is one of the most entertaining, touching, inspiring books I’ve read in a long time. Hope you’re feeling better!
    i may need to read the book and see the movie…just to see what all the HATE is about!!
    I’ve been meaning to read that book. I HATED (hated with the power of 1,000 suns) Eat, Pray, Love. Do you think your feelings for Julie and Julia are similar?
    Ok, these may not be post worthy questions but maybe questions I have.
    What is your ‘hood like? Is this where you’ve always lived in the City? Do you harbor secret desires for other neighborhoods?
    Travel plans for the year? I need to get my stalking schedule in order.
    Meet any new interesting/good authors lately?
    Did you decide what kind of laptop to get? (sorry if this has already been covered, mine was a whore and has a bad virus, so I’ve been slacking on blog reading)
    Thoughts on Atlanta? Would you move there? Did you eat chicken and waffles? Greens and cornbread? Shrimp and grits? Have you been to Ria’s Bluebird yet? I sometimes have dreams about their breakfasts and coffee. No, I’m not hungry or anything right now, why do you ask?!
    I have not seen “Julie and Julia” nor read Julie Powell’s book. I did, however, read Julia Child’s book “My Life in France” and loved it. Highly recommended.
    As for post ideas, you could always resort to answering questions out of those ice-breaker or team-building exercise books. Even if the question is cheesy, I’m pretty sure your response would be hilarious 🙂
  9. i do like captioned kittehs!
    re-enact new years? reenact xmas? reenact…something?
    my aunt told me (expecting me to be excited?) that she got the movie julie and julia and then went on to say something about me being obsessive like julia and then other personality traits of julie. haven’t read or seen it. but from what i hear…my aunt’s comment doesn’t come off as a compliment. would being called obsessive be a compliment? and i don’t know anyone else who would call me obsessive? it left me confused to say the least.
  10. Darcey says:
    My biggest problem with Julie & Julia? Meryl was so fabulous as Julia Child in the movie, that getting an ACTUAL movie about Julia Child with such an accomplished actress (and a Sue Sylvester cameo) now won’t happen! I mean, I could watch a full-length feature film on Julia and Paul Child with Stanley Tucci and Meryl Streep – I just hate that such a whiny little brat was the way it happened!
    BOO.
    You know, I liked Julie and Julia, but I knew nothing about Julie Powell before I saw the movie. Then I did a little Googling and felt like I had just spent two hours being LIED TO.
  12. Rhi says:
    Loved the parts of Julie & Julia that did not include Julie Powell. And, I’m with Darcey, I think a Julia Child movie with Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci would be marvelous, but Julie Powell ruins everything.
    Also, you should read My LIfe in France. It’s a wonderful book.
  13. Nicole says:
    Not sure if you’ve done anything like this before but on my blog I did “The Seven Deadly Secrets.” The “deadly” part wasn’t true but was there merely for dramatic effect. I revealed seven secrets over a random period of time. It was fun and was a good way to knock out seven blog posts when I was low on creative blog mo-jo.
    that’s why i didn’t see the movie! my mom did research on julie powell and her book / blog etc before getting to see a special pre-screening (since she’s a food writer) and learned about how she sucks as a human. and also as a chef, really. and how crappy it is to have someone like her trying to be julia child’s legacy. so i’m very torn, because i want to see merryl streep rock the julia child house, but without having to deal with other julie. can someone make me a dvd of just HALF the movie?
  15. I feel like laundry always sneaks up on me, and then I’m like HOW DO I HAVE SO MANY CLOTHES? Maybe that’s the real problem. Maybe I need to throw out half my wardrobe…
  16. Ann Marie says:
    I read Julie & Julia as well as My Life in France and enjoyed both, but Julia Child is a far more interesting person.
    I didn’t start hating Julie Powell until I read Cleaving. I don’t hate her because she had an affair. I hate her because she’s so damn whiny, selfish, desperate & entitled about the whole thing.
    Too bad there’s not a way to just extract the Julia portions of the movie.
  17. Noelle says:
    I’d like to hear more about what Julie Powell did to you that you feel so strongly…
  20. I was thinking about renting Julie and Julia but I have heard that Amy Adams is a jerk in real life and Julie in the movie is super annoying so that is a no go for me.
    But eating butter and drinking wine with Julia Child sounds awesome.
  21. We have had the freezing fog down here in Central Illinois also. VERY annoying. BUT! Today we didn’t have any dense fog, freezing or otherwise, for the first time in a solid week! Cause for celebration? Nope – – we had freezing RAIN instead. And expect more tomorrow . . . Winter in Illinois just plain sucks, don’t it?
    I think the weather is part of the reason for my writer’s block also. I’m ready for April.
  22. slynnro says:
    Have you read My Life in France? Julia is tres awesome. Even more so because she wrote a nasty letter to Julie Powell before she died.
  23. Kerri Anne says:
    I too am in the “not interested” camp, re: Julie & Julia, though I will also admit to being mildly curious because so many people have such strong! opinions about the book and movie, one way or the other.
  24. Mahnee says:
    I thought that was Glee’s how Sue “Cs” it!!!! I forgot to look at the credits to be sure. Meryl Streep rocked, as usual. WIth all the mentions in the comments about Julia’s book, it’s now a must read.
  25. jodifur says:
    I just took the book out of the library. Did you read the book or just see the movie. I haven’t seen the movie and now I’m wondering if I should skip the book.
