Goodbye Crappy Laptop
Posted By Kristabella on January 6, 2010
(I should note that I wrote this last night when my laptop died. And then I spent about 2 hours trying to post it to my blog from my phone. YESTERDAY WAS A TECHNOLOGY FAIL, TO SAY THE LEAST.)
:::::
I’m posting this from my iPhone. I hope it doesn’t turn out like the last post I tried to write on my phone that I LOST, which I would link to, but you can’t do that shit on here. Or if you can, I have no idea how.
Anyway, my laptop won’t turn on. Research again tells me this is the same motherboard issue. And that losing wireless access was like losing the ability to walk. Now it doesn’t even turn on. It is dead. Dead and gone, like Justin Timberlake so poetically sings.
I thought I’d have a few more days! A few more days to say our goodbyes! At least a few more days to use the Ethernet cable that I JUST BOUGHT LAST NIGHT! (Oh and funny side note, I kept the packaging and receipt yesterday in case it didn’t work and then JUST TONIGHT figured it was safe to throw it away and tear up the receipt into TINY LITTLE PIECES! TINY LITTLE PIECES! There is $25 down the drain.)
So it is gone. I’m sad because I didn’t back it up. After ALL that talk of backing it up when the wireless stopped working, I didn’t actually get around to backing it up. Because I was too lazy.
I actually was trying to be better about posting more regularly on here in 2010, or twenty ten. I have taken this as a sign that the greater human population DID NOT WANT THIS SAME THING! WHY???!?!? WHY WORLD, WHY?
In the mean time, I’ll be looking for a new laptop. Probably not a Mac, since I have zero money and they cost a lot more than zero money. But we’ll see. I’m going to be doing my research and NOT buying an HP again. (Seriously, there was this study and they were by far the worst when it comes to laptop reliability. THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN GOOD KNOWLEDGE TO HAVE IN 2007! OR TWENTY OH SEVEN!) (ALSO, YOU HAVE ALL BEEN WARNED. DON’T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE AS ME!)
Buy hey, now I can go to bed earlier and have more strange dreams about reality TV show people, which I would have told you about if not for the DYING LAPTOP and all.
Oh first world problems, why do you taunt me so? If my feet weren’t so sore from wearing these diamond shoes that are too tight, I’d totally kick someone or something.

You can get a Mac at Best Buy on payment plans with 0% financing for 18 months. I pay about $80 a month or so. Not bad (and that’s for the macbook pro, less for the regular one)

If it’s dead because of the motherboard, you won’t have lost any data. Just get someone to pull the hard drive out for you and transfer the information over to whatever new machine you get. It’s possible they’ll do that for you whereever you end up buying your new machine.
I’m impressed that you typed a whole post on your iPhone, honestly. The last time I tried to do that, I got all irritated and threw the damned thing on the floor. 😉

I feel your pain with the HP laptop. The only non-Mac I’ve ever owned was an HP 17″ laptop that crapped out on me in less than a year. First the hinge broke, then it lost the internet, then the hard drive died.
The lesson is don’t walk into Best Buy and buy whatever looks cool.
I mean, it’s kind of ironic that I didn’t buy a laptop online. And considering that I read internet reviews for DVDs, books, lipstick, and shoes, that I didn’t research this purchase AT ALL. So hmmm … maybe I should have read on-line reviews for computers ???

I feel your first world problem. When my previous laptop started giving me the blue screen of death on a ridiculously regular basis, I felt lost, adrift without my steady and regular access to important news sources like IMDB and television without pity’s message boards. I finally fixed the BSoD problem by completely turning off the wireless and sticking with DSL. Not a problem because of the layout of my house which allowed me to keep my laptop on my coffee table at all times. But my first world problem wasn’t truly solved until my parents gave me a gift certificate to Best Buy for my birthday, which helped me buy a brand new, shiny laptop (not HP) that has proper wireless functioning. (Though getting a wireless router to work in my house proved to be another, though lesser, first world problem.)

many laptops are unreliable. but only like 2 years? that sucks. i had a dell laptop that the motherboard when out on. it was terrible. after that i said i am just buying the cheapest laptop i can b/c they die too fast to invest more money. that is my 2 cents.
also, you can get one of those hard drive cases with a usb cord so that you can take out your hard drive and STILL HAVE ALL YOUR STUFF. hey, look, new external hard drive! that is what we did with my dell that died.
so, what i am saying here is –back up smack up. you still have your stuff.

KJ, return the ethernet cable anyway without the receipt. Many stores have a policy where you get to return two things without a receipt per year, as long as you present the same credit or debit card you used to pay for it. It’s just a small thing, but one less aggravation in the Saga of the HP POS. So sorry you are sans laptop.
I don’t know if you need a serious business machine or not, but I just bought a $400 ASUS netbook that I love love love love love with a 9-hour battery that’s under 3#. I think it’s the 1000EEE. Check it! And feel better in the twenty tens.
My laptop is on its last legs at the moment, so I feel your pain. I figure mine is just waiting for me to have some other huge exoense to cover, and then it’ll put me in the position you’re in now. I’m impressed that you can write whole posts on your iPhone, though – I don’t think I’d ever have the patience for that!

I bought my laptop through TigerDirect.com. The College I work at orders a LOT of tech equipment from them. I have always had good products, good service, and FAST shipping (they have a warehouse in Chicago they ship from). Just a thought for when you are comparison shopping.
My laptop is a Lenovo, and it’s been a really good one. The College bought 40 of them for a couple of our Divisions, and they have worked out really well!

I am so sorry for your loss.
That sounds sarcastic – but isn’t.

if you want a Dell, I may be able to help you get a discount.:)
I once blogged from my iphone. It was…tedious. I am now using the power of my mind to send you a free awesome laptop in the mail. Let me know if it works.

I got Shortman a Dell. And we have a Dell upstairs. The only problems we’ve ever had were related to the video card, which, of course, S.M. HAD TO HAVE an upgrade for because of his gaming.
And they always run great specials. Just sayin’.
