To Grow Out Or Not To Grow Out?

Posted By on August 18, 2011

That is the question.

I am currently at the phase where I am deciding whether or not to grow out my bangs. I’ve had them for like three years? And I’m wondering if I need a change.

Do you think I should go from this:

Back to this?

I know that growing out bangs is a pain in the ass. But I am not super aware because the last time I did it was my senior year of college, when I could wear hats and not wash my hair for days on end and it was no big deal. Also, I was just starting my first full-time job out of college and had NO CLUE about hair and wardrobe and make-up. (My God, you should have seen the crap I used to wear. It was a good thing I started off in the NFL where half the building was walking around in shorts and no shoes.) (Also, I never wore any kind of make-up until my first day at the 49ers. Because I figured I was an adult now and that was the right thing to do.) (Silly 21 year old me.)

So my trepidation with growing them out is that I don’t know what to DO with them while I’m growing them out. And here is where I need your help, internet! How do you manage the bangs in that grow-out stage? Lots of bobby pins, I’d imagine. But WHAT exactly am I doing with the bobby pins? I need some sort of Whoorl Hair Tutorial or something!

Also, headbands? I would imagine those would help. Where do I buy headbands? What kind of headbands do I need?

I’m figuring if I want to do this, now is the best time. Summer (AND HUMIDITY) is coming to a close, so I don’t have to worry about them curling up at the ends as they get longer. And hopefully, maybe with taking some pre-natal vitamins to help with the growth, I can get them all grown out before the start of next summer. Or close enough where I’m not worried about the humidity making me look like Farrah Fawcett.

What say you? Should I or shouldn’t I? And if I do, PLEASE HELP ME NOT TO LOOK LIKE A FOOL! Well, at least no more of a fool than I look like on a normal day.

I say grow them out, I like that look better…

Can’t give you any advice though – I haven’t done really short bangs in a long time and I have thin hair that doesn’t frizz/curl at all, so I have no clue! lol

    Good luck!

  2. I think you look super cute with bangs and I would probably keep them. That said, I remember what a pain in the ass they are and how I can only have them for a few months or so before I start to hate life itself, so I totally get that you want to grow them out.

The last two times I’ve grown mine out, I’ve gone with the highly technical and complicated method of….pushing them to the side of my face. No bobby pins or headbands or anything; just kind of shoving them over to the side until they got long enough to blend with my other hair. I’m not saying it’s the BEST method, just that I’ve never been stopped in the street and, like, yelled at for having ridiculous hair or anything. But maybe everyone was just being super polite. Anyway, yours already look pretty long so I doubt it would take a lot of time.

You grow it out girl! I know it might be the norm for being a girl but it does not mean it fits everyone. I like your look without the bangs.

Personally, I like you better without bangs….you can see more of your face and you have GREAT EYES…you can’t really notice them as much with the bangs.

I have lots of tricks, as I am 3/4 of the way through the process right now.

I kind of like the bangs. But if you wanna grow them out, you could just kind of suffer pushing them to the side until they are long enough to put behind your ears. (the first picture looks not too far off). While growing out (if you have some layers cut in your hair) you could also do the kind of longer, swoopy bangs where it is short-ish and then gets longer and sort of blends into your regular length. (that is a terrible description, but I couldn’t find a good picture).

I say grow them. For reals.

    Also? Hi!

What about some kind of ‘swoop bang’ style? I’ve fought the bang wars off and on for years, and found it’s a nice medium. Of course, we are not face twins, so I can’t be sure it would absolutely work the type of look you want to achieve and your face structure.

I’m in the process of growing mine out, too. The key is to start getting them cut so they start to blend in with the rest of the hair. I got mine trimmed so they became side-swept bangs, and just started parting my hair that way, so it looked intentional. I think this was 3 months ago, and now they’re halfway between cheekbone & chin-length (so they’re somewhere around my lips?).

I’m heading to my next hair appointment tomorrow, and just have them faded into my layers a little more and shaped so they’re cleaner. We’re almost to the point I can tuck them behind my ears and they’ll stay, but I still rely on bobby pins when I’m working out, or spending a lot of time outside and I don’t want them plastered to my forehead.

  9. I vote grow them out! (Says the girl who’s been asking her stylist if she should get bangs for a year now.)

I agree with Ali. The longer hair shows off your pretty face and eyes. 🙂

I like the bangs. But if they’re feeling old to you, maybe try a different style?

Start the growing process, and have them cut sideswept so you can push them off to the side. It’s amazing what changing the shape of your bangs will do in helping to keep them out of your face. Did you see the video I just put up of having a friend cut your bangs? I’m not saying have a friend do it, but have your hairstylist cut them in that manner and they won’t be in your eyes all the time.

Then, when it’s the dead of winter and you’re sick of long, sideswept bangs, just cut them blunt again. 😉 They are tres cute on you!

I like both looks actually – so best of luck on whichever you pick. That said – tell us more – you worked for the NFL?

Don’t grow them out if you are going to just push them behind your ear. Have a style in mind beforehand. While you’re growing them, you can sweep them to the side and use a little wax to keep them from falling back in your face (without looking greasy). Another option is to have them cut on the angle, but that means you’ll have to commit to the side part. Have fun. I’m trying to grow all of mine out from a pixie. I may not make it.

  15. Diana says:

No bangs!! Absolutely grow them out!

  16. Mary says:

I know this was not one of the choices, but I vote for switching to a side part and making your bangs do that swoopy thing, versus their current straight down orientation. I covet swoopy bangs, probably because I can never have them (tiny forehead). Go swoopy!

Jumping in all late in the game – but I think you should grow them out. I’m a much bigger fan of the sideswept bangs look. My hairstyle now looks similar to your second photo but I have the option to do the swoop bangs as it was cut into my layers. For me personally – I like the option of bangs or not on a daily basis and this solves that. Either way you look nice girl so whatever you feel more comfortable with will rock!

My opinion is to cut side swept that can help to push them off to the side. It will look wonderful to have a change of your bangs out of your face. The natural expression of your face can’t be interrupted in this case.

There is absolutely no question that a no-bang look is more sophisticated. I recommend getting the pain of growing them out over with ASAP….Save the bangs for when you need to hide forehead lines! In about 20-30 years! Keeping the same hairstyle also makes it harder to judge when one gets older! During the growing out, there is really nothing that helps, and you have much advice here on the side-swoop which I cannot improve on. Whatever you choose…know that 4 out of 5 crazy cat girls who become spinsters for real have bangs.
