When My Mood Matches The Weather

Today was a rainy, fall-like day in Chicago. I know because I sat on my couch ALL DAY and watched the rain fall and fall. Because I am unemployed and in my book, unemployed = not showering/not moving from the couch.
Today was also the first day it really kind of hit me that HELLO! UNEMPLOYED! YOU DON’T KNOW WHERE YOUR NEXT MEAL IS COMING FROM! And I may have had a bit of a pity party for myself on my couch all afternoon because holy shitballs, I have been through a lot and am just now processing it. And this pity party involved a lot of tears and a nap. Because I tired myself out from all the crying.
I know this is a temporary thing. I know I will find something. It may be this week and it may be in a few months, but I know this won’t last too long. But that is not how it feels. It doesn’t feel like a vacation. Because I know I will not see my ex-co-workers again in a work setting. I know that while I lounge on the couch, emails and voicemails aren’t piling up at the office. It doesn’t feel temporary or good. It feels depressing. A big, giant, suffocating blanket of depressing.
So Day One was a big, giant FAIL WHALE. But tomorrow should be better. Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny. And tomorrow I have to get my ass out of bed and go on an interview. Where I just hope I don’t weep all over the interviewer. Because when I tear up at Lauren and Audrina’s little chat on The Hills, you know it is BAD.

After just having gone through being unemployed I can relate. (except that it was my own stupidity that chose to be unemployed ) Take your day (or two) to mope around and then make finding a job your job. I’m not in my dream job but I did find one that will (hopefully) pay the bills and give me a little of the extra time at home that I’ve been hoping for.

Don’t you hate it when people say you should enjoy your time off or you should take a vacation? Hey people, I don’t have a job! It’s not like you can go to Provence or take a few weeks to tour the Swiss Alps.

you should totally spend the next few days between interviews doing things everyone at work WISHES they could do. like go to the movies at 2pm. and go to the gym in the middle of the afternoon when it’s EMPTY. and sit all afternoon in the sun reading a book. (that last one should be done right outside an office building with lots of windows, for maximum jealousy-inducement.)

Three of my best days ever were in Chicago. Right after the bar exam, I got on a plane (still drunk) and flew to visit a friend. I spent three days with her (purely platonic, at least at that point), and the weather was perfect.
Nice weather in Chicago really lifts the spirit of the entire city, in my very, very limited experience.
I’m a little worried that my trip there next week will be overshadowed by the memory.

I so totally feel your pain – being unemployed is NOT a vacation. Though lots of people keep telling me I’m so lucky to not have to go to work in the morning. Which is an overly simplistic view of my current situation! Yes, not knowing where and when you’ll work next IS relaxing! Laying around all week IS possible when you have to job hunt like nobody’s business! This IS fun!
But, it’ll all work out eventually. At least you had a good rainy day to match your cloudy mood. If tomorrow brings an interview, that’s great news!

The next time it’s rainy and gross out, turn on lots of lights in your apartment and keep music or the TV going all day (background noise). Trust me, as the person who had two post-partum freak outs on rainy fall days, I know the importance of good light and friendly noise.
