We Fell In Love In A Hopeless Place

Posted By on January 12, 2012

I love bad music. If it is a pop song in the Top 40, odds are I’m going to love it and belt it out at the top of my lungs at any chance I get. I do not apologize for this. I realize I have shitty taste in music.

Anyway, so one of Rihanna’s new songs out now is called “We Fell in Love in aHopeless Place” and I just love it. It’s got a good beat. But as I was listening to it the other morning while getting ready for work, I thought “what exactly qualifies as a hopeless place?”

So I decided to list all the hopeless places I could think of to fall in love.

  • Crack house
  • Denny’s
  • Bomb shelter
  • The Superdome after Katrina
  • POW camp
  • Crashing plane
  • Jail
  • War time
  • Republican National Convention
  • Antarctica
  • Sinking ship
  • Mars
  • Bathroom stall
  • Rehab
  • Homeless shelter
  • Deserted island
  • Port-a-potty

Now it’s your turn! Add to the list!

First things first. I forgive you for liking Rihanna songs. Nothing makes me move faster to change the station than when one of her songs are on the radio. I just can’t handle her for some intense reason.

Second, you covered a lot of hopeless places so this is a tough assignment. I guess one man’s (or woman’s) hopeless could be another’s opportunity. Here are a few I thought of.

    Sperm bank
    Divorce court
    On a reality tv show

Dennys listed made me laugh myself silly at work. Mostly because Ive fallen in love in a dennys which is more embarrassing than your affection for Rhianna 😉

  5. Amber says:

I laughed so hard at Dennys inclusion on the list 🙂

I think you’ve got the hopeless places covered, so all I will say is that I share your love of bad music – that particular song is on my running playlist, as is a lot of hugely embarrasing stuff that I wouldn’t sit and listen to at home, but which I love to run or dance to: I have no shame!

I actually do know someone who met someone at rehab. Of course, she back in rehab in her now ex is in jail. Who would have thought it would have turned out like this.

i also love that song, and at the 3-day-long indian wedding i attended in November, this was a theme song of sorts – they played it a couple of times a night, each of the three nights, because it’s so good to dance to. then a guest made a neat video compilation of scenes she shot at the reception, and put it to that song. all of which is fine, except… isn’t that a little DEPRESSING as a wedding theme song? we’re getting married, because luckily we found love in a hopeless place! that hopeless, horrible place that was UVA, where we met!

during the september 11th tenth anniversary stuff I watched a documentary about this little town in Novia Scotia where all the planes that were incoming to the us from other countries were diverted to. It was apparently a mass of people some of whom had loved ones missing and many of whom couldn’t get home for days and days. One of the most interesting parts was this couple who fell in love. So that one works for me.

The saddest part about this song is the first time I heard it I thought “THIS is a perfect song for spin class.”

Hey speaking of people falling in love in strange places..I know a couple (let’s call them Couple A) who were attending conversion classes – the girlfriend half of Couple A was converting to Judaism so she could marry her boyfriend. At conversion class, they met Couple B, the boyfriend half of whom was converting to Judaism so he could marry his boyfriend. Can you see where this is going? Girlfriend from Couple A and boyfriend from Couple B ended up falling in love. In conversion class. No word yet on whether they decided to go through with the conversion.

    • bikerchick says:

@Jen: But…but…but…but…isn’t Couple B same sex? (“so he could marry his boyfriend”) So that’s even more qualified in the weirder than weird category because they met at CONVERSION CLASS, swap intended spouses, AND CONVERT FROM GAY TO STRAIGHT??? Did I read that right??? Maybe my head is foggy with snow today; I dunno.

      • Jen says:

@bikerchick: it’s not your head that is foggy, it was mine – boyfriend from Couple B was converting so he could marry his girlfriend. But it would have been even more interesting if they were same-sex!!!

Not that it matters at all, but I think the lyrics are actually “We found love in a hopeless place.” I know this because I, too, have great taste in bad music.
